Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
Nestled in the vast Pacific Ocean, the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) are a captivating chain of 14 tropical islands. This archipelago is a U.S. commonwealth located about 1,500 miles east of the Philippines and 1,500 miles south of Japan. Saipan, the largest island, serves as the vibrant heart of this stunning paradise, with Tinian and Rota following close behind in both charm and significance.
The people of the Northern Mariana Islands are a beautiful blend of Chamorro, and various other ethnic groups, including Carolinian, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and more. This rich cultural tapestry is reflected in their languages, traditions, and celebrations. You’ll hear a symphony of Chamorro and English as you wander through the bustling local markets or join in a traditional fiesta. The warmth and hospitality of the locals are legendary, making every visitor feel like part of the family.
Imagine pristine beaches with powdery white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and lush tropical forests teeming with exotic wildlife. The Northern Mariana Islands offer all this and more. Saipan boasts the iconic Grotto, a world-famous dive site with mesmerizing underwater caves. Tinian is home to the historic House of Taga, ancient latte stone pillars that stand as silent sentinels of a bygone era. Rota, the peaceful gem, enchants with its unspoiled beauty and serene vibe.

4-H Marianas is a positive youth development (PYD) program, under the auspices of the Northern Marianas College Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education Services (NMC CREES) Family, Community, and Youth Development (FCYD) programs, that offers enriching experiences for young people across the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, emphasizing the philosophy of "learning by doing." Through hands-on projects that concentrate on leadership development, 4-Hers engage in practical, real-world activities designed to cultivate essential skills. Under the mentorship of dedicated adult advisors, these young leaders are not only guided but also empowered to assume proactive leadership roles within the 4-H Marianas program and their broader communities. This dynamic approach ensures that participants grow into confident, capable leaders who are well-equipped to make meaningful contributions both locally and beyond.
4-H Marianas Youth Leadership Series
The 4-H Marianas Youth Leadership Series is an intensive 11-month program designed for the elected and appointed 4-H Council leaders from Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. This rigorous program immerses these young leaders in comprehensive training, enriching learning experiences, and community service projects that aim to give back to their communities. Collaborating with adults from across the CNMI, participants engage in co-developing professional development activities, community outreach initiatives, and recreational events that encourage their young peers to develop essential life skills such as communication, responsibility, and citizenship. Additionally, the youth leaders meet quarterly on each island—Saipan, Tinian, or Rota—to deeply engage with the community and explore topics such as agriculture, cultural history, traditional medicine, and watersheds. This holistic approach aims to cultivate the next generation of CNMI leaders, fostering a strong connection to the CNMI and encouraging them to return and contribute to the local economy after pursuing higher education or gaining other expertise.
